Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) would like to clarify that Night Flights at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) have not been suspended as per media reports last night.
KAA would like to state that a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) was issued by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority as a caution to pilots on the ongoing repair works on the Runway lights.
This is as per ICAO regulations Annex 14.
At no time did KCAA suspend flights at JKIA There were 24 take –offs and 12 landings at JKIA between 19:20 – 3: 30 am.
We wish to reassure all airline operators and the general public the repairs are at an advanced stage.
Our team are working on an active runway where there is need to maintain safety and uninterrupted operations.
The portable backup runway light system is being used to supplement runway lights as work continues. It is approved by both ICAO and FAA and is used worldwide.
