Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), according to International Organization for Standardization, refers to balanced initiative by organizations to address economic, social and environmental issues for the mutual benefit of their stakeholders.
CSR activities at Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) have over the years been based on non sustainable corporate philanthropy involving ad hoc donations to a number of areas including health and medical provision, education and training, HIV/AIDS, agriculture and food security and orphanage homes. The United Nations Global Compact launched in 2000 challenged corporations and/or organizations to integrate CSR initiatives in their business practices.
Being a, responsible corporate citizen, Kenya Airports Authority is now committed to upholding outstanding social and environmental responsibility as one of its core values. The KAA CSR policy will address this through CSR activities aimed at improving the quality of life of its staff, stakeholders and the general public.
KAA has commenced its CSR activities by identifying and appraising key issues This include:
- Health Initiatives
- Environment
- Education
- Scholarship fund for disadvantaged students from different communities
- Girl child education
- Community /Employee programs
- “Make A Difference Day (MADD)” initiative where staff reserve a day to go into communities to empower them through skills transfer.
The overall theme of KAA CSR activities is the Environment. The key areas of considerations are:
- Need to be proactive in the carbon footprint debate and safeguard the markets for exports of fresh produce loaded at our facilities thereby ensuring business continuity with the exporters
- Being a critical area of focus in the appraisal and bi-lateral negotiations by development partners for financial support in line with best practice.
- It has ripple effect on other areas such as health and medical, education, HIV/AIDs and agriculture and food security already being addressed by various organizations in Kenya.
Funding
The CSR budget be not less than 1% of pre-tax profit to fund the Program. This is in with current best practice as defined by the Kenya Institute of Management which also organizes the annual Company of the Year Awards (COYA) to recognize best practice in CSR.
